Concentric reducer vs eccentric reducer, what’s the difference?

Reducers, also called pipe size adapters, are common pipe fittings used to connect two pipelines with different nominal diameters. According to structural shape, reducers are divided into concentric reducers and eccentric reducers. Many piping designers and buyers struggle to select the proper type. Understanding their structural differences, fluid characteristics and applicable working conditions is critical to avoid operational problems such as air lock, liquid accumulation and pipeline cavitation.

A concentric reducer features a symmetrical conical structure. The central axis of the large end and small end stays on the same straight line. When viewed from the side, its outline presents a symmetrical trapezoid. Due to coaxial design, concentric reducers ensure smooth and steady transition of fluid inside the pipeline. The internal flow field changes gently, which brings relatively low local pressure loss.

Limited by its symmetrical shape, concentric reducers are mainly recommended for vertical pipelines. When installed vertically, it will not form trapped air or stagnant liquid. If a concentric reducer is applied to horizontal pipelines, an air pocket will form at the top inner side of the fitting. Gas trapped inside cannot be discharged smoothly, resulting in air binding. The air lock will hinder fluid transportation, cause pump vibration, noise, unstable flow and even damage fluid transport equipment. Concentric reducers are available in carbon steel, stainless steel and alloy steel, complying with ASME B16.9 standards for various pressure grades.

An eccentric reducer adopts an asymmetrical structure. One side of the fitting keeps a straight horizontal edge, while the other side slopes inward for diameter transition. The center lines of two ends do not overlap. The most important advantage of this design is eliminating air pockets during horizontal installation. When installed on horizontal pipes with the flat side placed on top, the inner top surface maintains a continuous horizontal gradient, preventing gas from being sealed inside the reducer. Therefore, eccentric reducers are the standard choice for horizontal liquid transport pipelines equipped with pumps.

However, eccentric reducers also have limitations. The asymmetrical shape leads to slightly higher fluid turbulence and greater local pressure drop compared with concentric reducers. Besides, eccentric reducers are rarely used for vertical pipelines. There is no obvious advantage over concentric reducers under vertical installation, and the asymmetrical structure may bring extra unbalanced pipeline stress.

There are clear selection principles for engineering projects. For vertical pipelines of liquid, gas and steam media, select concentric reducers to obtain stable fluid transition. For horizontal liquid pipelines connected to centrifugal pumps, eccentric reducers are mandatory to avoid air lock and protect pump devices.

Other practical notes cannot be ignored. First, confirm the installation direction. Eccentric reducers must be mounted flat-side-up on horizontal liquid pipelines. Wrong installation will still cause gas accumulation. Second, consider medium properties. For high-speed, easily vaporized fluid, the influence of pressure drop caused by eccentric reducers needs hydraulic calculation. Third, both types of reducers can be manufactured as seamless or welded products to match different pressure and temperature requirements.

In summary, the core difference between concentric reducer and eccentric reducer lies in axis alignment and installation suitability. Concentric reducers are coaxial and fit vertical pipelines. Eccentric reducers are offset and designed for horizontal liquid pipelines to prevent air lock. Reasonable selection eliminates common pipeline operation faults and ensures long-term stable operation of industrial piping systems.
